As a society, we have a tendency to imagine the most horrendous, disastrous, terrifying future events for ourselves. As a result, we are willing to buy, save, lock, hide or do whatever it takes to protect our possessions from harm.

We worry that someone is going to break into our house, so we buy an elaborate alarm system. We’re scared the bank is going to lose all our money, so we hide it under the mattress. We stress over the reckless drivers on the road who may hit our car, so we buy insurance.

All of this for the off chance that something bad may happen to your fleeting possessions.

Are some of these precautions justified? Yes, some are.

And for a reasonably small investment, we can ensure that we do not fall prey to these rare disasters. It’s a smart move.

However, the vast majority of these things can be replaced if damaged, lost, or stolen. It may cost you money, but over time they can all be replaced or even lived without.

So, if you are willing to make these small investments to protect your “things”, I ask you this:

Are you making the same level of investments in yourself? How much money, time, energy are you putting towards becoming a better person who is capable of handling whatever comes their way? What are you doing now, to ensure that you, your mind, your body, and your soul are prepared for future obstacles?

“The only guarantee, ever, is that things will go wrong. The only thing we can use to mitigate this is anticipation. Because the only variable we control completely is ourselves.” -Ryan Holiday

While a car accident is rare, the dark times of life are almost guaranteed.

What are you doing today that will help you move past them, grow from them, and continue to thrive?

Are you investing in “Obstacle Insurance”? Or are you just hoping that things will work out?

If you’re not preparing when it’s easy, you have no hope of doing it when it’s difficult.
